Entrepreneurs’ Day: J.K. Rowling
July 31st is the birthday of both Harry Potter and his world-renowned creator, author J.K. Rowling. While she is best known as an author, Rowling has also entered the world of entrepreneurs.
Prior to writing Harry Potter, Rowling struggled to make ends meet. She was a single mother without a source of income. Even after finishing the first book in the series, finding a publisher came with many initial rejections. During this time, she also suffered from depression. However, when Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was finally released to the public, it launched a world-famous, expansive franchise spanning books, movies, video games, and even plays.
Rowling was the first author in history to become a billionaire from book sales alone. However, she lost that status as a result of making several charitable donations. She also became an entrepreneur when she launched her own charity, named Lumos after a spell in the Harry Potter books. Lumos aims to end the institutionalization of children around the world.
In addition to writing, Rowling continues to champion various causes and charities around the globe. She also inspires us to continue to see the magic in the world around us.
